A Crystal Plasticity View of Powder Compaction

چکیده

The cold compaction of an aggregate of powder is treated from the viewpoint of crystal plasticity theory. The contacts between particles are treated as compaction planes which yield under both normal and shear straining. The hardening of each plane represents both geometric and material hardening at the contacts between particles; the macroscopic tangent stiffness can be written in terms of the hardening rate for active compaction planes. During the early stages of compaction the contacts yield in an independent manner, which can be interpreted within the crystal context as independent hardening. The macroscopic yield surfaces for isostatic and closed die compaction are estimated for a uniform distribution of an orthogonal pair of compaction planes. A vertex forms at the loading point and significant anisotropy develops for closed die compaction.

An Arbitrary Lagrangian-eulerian Finite Element Method for Cone-cap Plasticity; Application to Powder Compaction Simulation

The compaction forming of metal powder is a process involving large deformations, large strain, non-linear material behavior and friction. Consequently, the numerical analysis of such a highly non-linear process is a formidable computational problem. In this paper, an ALE technique is presented based on a generalized cap plasticity model in simulation of powder forming processes. In ALE formula...

Experimental Investigation of Metal Powder Compaction without Using Lubricant

The main objective of this work was to design a novel device for compaction of metal powders so that the green parts could be ejected with applying a negligible force and without the need for any lubricant in either an admixed form or applied to the die wall. For this purpose a 40 mm diameter one-piece die was envisaged which would elastically contracted 0.076 mm before compaction and after com...

Data Generation for the Numerical Simulation of Powder

Numerical simulation of industrial plastic deformation processes needs of a precise characterization of the mechanical material properties included in the particular elastoplastic model. The plasticity model of bulk metallic materials is well known and the tests used for characterization are simple and well typified. The situation is quite different when the compaction of metal and ceramic powd...

Analysis of tablet compaction. I. Characterization of mechanical behavior of powder and powder/tooling friction.

In this first of two articles on the modeling of tablet compaction, the experimental inputs related to the constitutive model of the powder and the powder/tooling friction are determined. The continuum-based analysis of tableting makes use of an elasto-plastic model, which incorporates the elements of yield, plastic flow potential, and hardening, to describe the mechanical behavior of microcrys...

Enhanced densification of zinc powders through thermal cycling

The densification of zinc powders by uniaxial hot pressing is investigated under both isothermal and thermal cycling conditions. Thermal cycling results in enhanced densification kinetics as compared to isothermal compaction at the upper cycle temperature. Using mechanistic models of initial-stage powder densification, the experimental data are analyzed to reveal the creep stress-exponent and a...
